Biography

Cueponi Cihuatl is from Zacatecas, Mexico and grew up in Columbus Junction, Iowa. She received her A.A. degree from Indian Hills Community College, her B.A. in Spanish from the University of Northern Iowa, and her M.Ed. in Student Affairs from Iowa State University. She is also an alumna of the Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines. During her time there, she worked with the Polk County Health Department to create a breast cancer awareness campaign for Latinx womxn across the state. Cueponi Cihuatl has taught K-12 in Iowa as a Spanish and ELL teacher. She is the co-founder of the non-profit Latinos for Washington, Inc. In 2018, she became the youngest Latinx in Iowa to be inducted into the Latino Hall of Fame as the first recipient of the Latinx Youth Leadership Award. During her free time, Cueponi Cihuatl likes to travel, write, and spend time with her family.
